A Varityper from Richard Polt's site

History & Basic Info

The Varityper is descended from the Hammond Typewriter. It is an electrified version. The Varityper was designed for making neat final copies of documents. The Varityper is especially effective at right justification, having different types of print on pages, and typing in different pitches too. The entirety of the machine is not electric, but it does have electrically powered mechanisms in it. Namely the printing action.

Common Issues

Because they are electric, these machines often have mechanical issues. Electrical issues are also common. Line cords on 40's and 50's machines need to be replaced, as they are a fire hazard. Motors will get dirty and gum up, but they are designed to be taken out and apart and cleaned.
